비단뱀이라는 속명은 1803년 프랑수아 마리 도댕이 피부에 반점이 있고 혀가 길게 갈라진 독이 없는 뱀을 위해 제안한 것이다.<ref name=Daudin/>

[[아프리카]]에서, 비단뱀은 [[사하라]] 남쪽의 열대 지방에서 자생하지만, 남아프리카의 극남서쪽 끝이나 [[마다가스카르]]에서는 자생하지 않다. [[아시아]]에서는 [[니코바르 제도]]를 포함한 [[방글라데시]], [[네팔]], [[인도]], [[파키스탄]], [[스리랑카]]에서 [[미얀마]]를 거쳐 동쪽으로 [[인도차이나]], [[중화인민공화국|중국]] 남부, [[홍콩]], [[하이난성]]은 물론 [[인도네시아]]와 [[필리핀]]의 [[말레이시아]] 지역에서도 발생한다.<ref name="McD99"/>
