북반구의 온대를 중심으로 널리 분포하고 있으며, 세계적으로 약 14속의 180여 종 가량이 알려져 있는데, 한국에는 [[야고속]]·[[오리나무더부살이속]]·[[초종용속]] 등의 5속 5종 정도가 자란다.

모두 다른 식물의 뿌리에 기생하는 초본으로서, 곧게 뻗는 줄기에는 비늘 모양의 작은잎이 어긋나면서 빽빽하게 달려 있다. 꽃은 좌우대칭인 양성화로, 잎겨드랑이에 1개씩이 달려 수상꽃차례를 이룬다. 꽃부리는 5갈래로 나뉘어 다소 입술 모양이 된다. 수술은 4개인데, 그 중 2개는 길고 2개는 짧다. 씨방은 상위로, 2개 또는 3개의 심피로 이루어져 있으며 안에는 1개의 방이 있다. 열매는 삭과로 보통 꽃밥에 싸여 있는데, 특히 씨는 숙주 뿌리에 붙었을 때에만 싹이 튼다.
